Effect of Sugar on the Growth Rate of Yeast

Post by cookiestarninja »

Hi! :D
Since my research question couldn't quite fit in the subject box, here it is:
What is the effect of concentration on sugar varieties on growth rate in yeast?
So I was thinking about my methodologies for this lab and I wasn't too sure about how I should conduct this lab :?
I do have a brief idea though; mixing the yeast with the sugar, and then putting a balloon on the top of the bottle, though I wasn't too sure about the yeast mixture? Should it just be water with yeast, or just plain, dry yeast? Or anything else? (Please tell me if this is wrong though)
As for my sugar varieties, I plan on using Kitchen Sugars ("equal" sugar, table sugar, etc), Monosaccharides, and Disaccharides. I will purchase this accordingly.
Thank you!

Hello Cookiestarninja!

Congratulations on undertaking this project and on getting documented before starting!
I looked up the science buddies website and found this project that gives a full protocol on how to measure CO2 production and prepare the culture:

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions and how the project is going!

Hi,

Nice experiment. Just a tip for your experiment.
One of the by-products of sugar fermentation is ethanol and it could be inhibiting yeast growth and you might consider removing ethanol from the yeast and deciding this as a reason for results you may observe inyour experiment. Also make sure that you put yeast in an environment that is optimally suited for its growth. For example oxygen/carbon dioxide content.

Take care,

Jay
