Life Science/Chemistry K-12 Content Developer
(US Remote Part-time/Flexible Schedule)
We are seeking a part-time Life Science/Chemistry Content Developer who is enthusiastic about designing hands-on projects to inspire K-12 students to explore, understand, and apply cutting-edge life science and/or chemistry topics. This is a unique opportunity to positively impact millions of students annually and shape how the next generation approaches and engages in scientific exploration and inquiry.
The Life Science/Chemistry Content Developer will be an integral member of the Science Buddies scientific team. This individual will play a critical role in both expanding and maintaining our extensive library of science project ideas, as well as other educational resources for K-12 students. This position reports to the Director of Science and STEM Content.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conceptualize, test, and author original and engaging hands-on science projects for K-12 students with an emphasis on projects in a wide variety of cutting-edge areas (biomedical and health sciences, biotechnology, genetics and genomics, virology and epidemiology, green and environmental chemistry, astrobiology, agricultural technology, cooking & food chemistry, etc.) that appeal to students and span many different interests.
- Create videos and other visual content to support student learning and engagement in hands-on science projects.
- Contribute to developing hands-on K-12 science kits.
- Collaborate with other science content team members as needed to create high-quality content to meet team deadlines.
- Stay abreast of the latest developments in life sciences and/or chemistry and assess their potential integration into K-12 educational content.
- Review, revise, and update existing life science and/or chemistry-related science content on the Science Buddies website to improve relevance and educational value.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in life science and/or chemistry as needed.
- Provide your own home computer setup that is capable of running video editing software. You must also have space for creating high-quality pictures and videos.
Desired Skills and Experience
While no one candidate may have all these characteristics, a strong candidate will have many of these qualities:
- Enthusiasm for making scientific concepts understandable and engaging to others and contributing positively to a passionate team.
- A Master's degree or higher in Molecular or Cellular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field.
- Extensive knowledge in life sciences and/or chemistry, particularly in the areas of biomedical and health sciences, biotechnology, genetics and genomics, virology and epidemiology, green and environmental chemistry, astrobiology, agricultural technology, and cooking & food chemistry. Candidates with expertise in multiple scientific disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to simplify and make complex scientific topics appealing to a broad audience. We value candidates who can provide examples of their previously authored content.
- Experience in effective K-12 instructional design is a plus but not required.
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a remote environment and embrace challenges with a positive and growth-oriented mindset.
- Experience in identifying, assessing, and integrating credible sources in the field, while considering the educational needs and comprehension levels of K-12 students. Being resourceful is an asset.
- Proficiency in creating scientific and/or educational content through videos (with audio recordings), photography, and graphics, including experience with video editing software.
- Experience with developing science and/or educational content for different social media platforms.
Location and Work Hours
This is a part-time work-from-home position on a team that is fully remote. Applicants from anywhere in the United States will be considered.
