Hi everyone,
I'm interested in finding simple science experiments that explore reaction time and concentration. For example, one idea is to use a ruler-drop test to measure how quickly someone reacts when catching a falling ruler.
I would like to know whether reaction time changes when people are distracted by background noise or have to focus on another task at the same time. What variables should be controlled to make the experiment fair and reliable? Also, how many trials would be enough to produce meaningful results?
I'd appreciate any suggestions for improving this experiment or other easy ways to investigate reaction time using basic materials. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Hi,
That's a great initial idea. The ruler test is a good starting point, and if you're interested, you could also explore these related Science Buddies resources:
- Reaction time with a ruler: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/stem-act ... ction-time
- Peppermint & reaction time: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... tion-times
- A previous Science Buddies thread that talks about controlled variables and trials in a similar experiment: viewtopic.php?t=25211
Good luck on your experiment!
