Genetics, mutation rate
Genetics, mutation rate
Hello Sir/Madam
I was doing a project similar to the primate line project on this page which allows you to find the rate of mutation. I have used the protein cytochrome c and cytochrome c oxidase from the homo sapiens genome and ran in on the BLAST software to identify the identify percentage in primates. I have been stuck on trying to identify the rate of mutation with the data that i collected.
Another calculation that i have which im not…

Genetic Mutations Project
Genetic Mutations Project
Hi,
Recently I have been working on the "From Genes to Genetic Diseases: What Kinds of Mutations Matter?" project.
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_ideas/BioMed_p007.shtml#procedure
I have completed it, however I am confused about what you can conclude from the data, and how you can make a graph from it. From my data, I can infer that if the normal and mutant amino acids are different, then a genetic disease…

A second mutation found in the tumors of patients with BRAF-mutated metastatic melanoma does not contribute to resistance to BRAF inhibitor drugs, a finding that runs counter to what scientists expected to be true.

Virus Genetic mutation experiment
Virus Genetic mutation experiment
Hi!
I’m an high school student from South Korea.
I want to plan an experiment to distinguish whether a specific genetic mutation of a virus is due to selective pressure or if it is just a simple founder effect.
However, I just can’t get it started (have no idea how to plan an experiment.)
I’d be really thankful if you could just simply suggest a guideline or a few ideas that I could try out!

Researchers at the UCLA stem cell center and the departments of chemistry and biochemistry and pathology and laboratory medicine have identified, for the first time, a generic way to correct mutations in human mitochondrial DNA by targeting corrective RNAs.

New Lesson Plan uses a simple taste test to help students understand genetic mutation firsthand. Not everyone will detect the taste of phenylthiocarbamide (PTC). What does this mean and what can students learn about genetics from investigating the results of a taste test? Have students sort themselves into taster and non-taster groups to begin the process of finding out!

Rate of Mutation in primates?
Rate of Mutation in primates?
Hello,
I am conducting research on which primates humans are most closely related to. It is the Science Buddies project entitled "Neanderthals, Orangutans, Lemurs, & You—It's a Primate Family Reunion!". I have finished the project but I have one question. In procedure step 18b, it asks me to "Calculate the average mutation rate.". How do I do this?
Thank you for your feedback.

Re: From Genes to Genetic Diseases
Hi kleenex,
When we talk about physical properties of DNA (length, width) we usually use angstroms (10^-8 m).
Please let us know if you have any other questions,
Peter S.

Help in Bioinformatics : Mutation frequency
Help in Bioinformatics : Mutation frequency
Hey,
I was wondering if anyone knows how to get a specific frequency of a mutation using the ncbi site.
An example of an SNP mutation : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/SNP/snp_ref.cgi?rs=334
Thanks :)
Re: Help in Bioinformatics : Mutation frequency
Hi,
I am not positive of this, but my understanding is that the allele frequency of the mutant hemoglobin (HbS) is given in the table near the end…
