Science Buddies staff

Hi! I’m Tracey Ngo, a Master’s student in Computer Science at Tufts University, where I focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. At Science Buddies, I write many of our machine learning projects and create coding tutorials for our YouTube channel.

One reason I love machine learning is that it connects computer science with so many other fields. With AI, you can build projects related to healthcare, sustainability, art, music, sports, education, robotics, and more. I enjoy creating projects that help students see how coding and AI can be used to solve real-world problems.

My path to computer science was not a straight line. I originally studied International Relations at UC Davis, but during my senior year I realized I wanted to focus more on programming and technology. That led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science.

I live in San Jose, California. When I’m not creating machine learning projects, I like to crochet, draw, hike, play guitar, and travel.

Have you ever needed to make a lot of flashcards for a class, but didn’t have the time–or weren’t sure how to make ones that actually help you learn? Maybe you like studying on the go, or you’re trying to squeeze in a quick 10-minute review session between other things. In this project, you will learn how to use ChatGPT (or another AI tool of your choice like Gemini, Copilot, etc.) to generate effective study flashcards quickly and customize them to fit your class and… Read more

Dance, especially K-pop dance, has become a significant part of pop culture. Even without dance classes, many people have been learning dance through copying choreography from dance videos and dance tutorials. K-pop routines are fun and expressive, but they can also be tricky. Moves are fast, precise, and often depend on small details, such as hand placement, angles, and timing. How do you know if you’re really matching the choreography? One way developers have gamified the dance learning… Read more

Have you ever wanted to know where hot spots of infection are or see how viruses spread? Are you interested in seeing how this changes over time? Check out our new science project that uses data visualization tools and tested wastewater data to track the virus that causes COVID-19 over time. Read more

Global sea levels are rising, but modeling and predicting them can be challenging with more and more extreme weather events. Can we use machine learning to track and predict sea level changes? In this science project, you will use previously collected data and machine learning to see if you can predict future relative sea level changes.  Read more

Do you ever wonder if you spend too much time online? How can the amount of time spent on social media influence someone's mental health? What other factors play a role? In this science project, you will investigate which variables correlate with better mental health scores using a machine learning algorithm called the Random Forest algorithm.  Read more

Can AI understand human language? In the future, AI could aid in emergency interpretive service in the hospital when translators aren't available. But can current AI algorithms understand non-verbal languages like sign language? In this science project, you will test whether AI can learn sign language gestures or phrases to see if it can be used for interpretation. Read more
