It seems that while the practice of bloodletting throughout history had little or no effect on most diseases, and the practice was abandoned in the 19th century, new research published in BioMed Central's open-access journal BMC Medicine demonstrates that blood donation has real benefits for obese people with metabolic syndrome. Two sessions of bloodletting were enough to improve blood pressure and markers of cardiovascular disease.

23andMe used its unique online platform to find five significant genetic associations for hypothyroidism in the largest known GWAS of hypothyroidism conducted to date. The details of the study are now available online in the journal PLoS ONE. Three of the significant associations, rs6679677, rs3184504, and rs2517532 in are known to be involved in other autoimmune diseases, and others reported are rs4915077 near VAV3 and rs925489 near FOXE1, a gene involved in thyroid development.
