Help with data
I'm doing a project about which packaging preserves fruit the best. Was told by judge at school level that the data was qualitative not quantitative.We used appearance, smell, and feel. What would be a good way to collect data on fruit ripeness?

This is an interesting project. If you want quantitative data for this project, there are a few ways to do it. For color, you could take images before and after the experiment, and then download the images on a program such as ImageJ. ImageJ is a free analysis tool available from the NIH. We use it in the lab to quantify images from gels, but I'd think that you could use it here too to compare your samples.
For feel, what you could do is cut up pieces of fruit before and after the experiment and place flat weighted objects on top of them to see how much weight they can hold before they are crushed. For example, you could cut a flat slice of a banana before and after the experiment and place flat weighted objects (of known weight of course) on top until the piece is crushed. These will allow you to have quantifiable data for your project. Let us know how you want to proceed and what other questions you may have.
