Lactic acid

Post by LW18007 »

Hi I have a question about how the proccess in the muscles when they are starting to tolerate more and more of lactic acid. Couldn't seem to find the actual process of what happens inside the body/muscle. Thanks /Linus

Hi Linus!

Typically, our bodies like to create energy using oxygen (aerobic process), but sometimes when we engage in really vigorous exercise, we need energy to be produced really fast, and our body is not able to keep up with producing enough oxygen to keep up with that amount of energy needed. Then, our muscles will use an anaerobic process to create energy (without oxygen).

During this process, your muscles and body convert pyruvate molecules into lactate. Lactate can cause glucose to be broken down. With glucose being broken down, you can use this as energy. Muscle cells can usually carry out the anaerobic process for a few minutes and lactate will be produced at a high level for this time period.

The muscles are not necessarily tolerating more lactic acid. I hope this helps answer your question!
