I'm not really sure what you mean here... is this a specific requirement for a school fair?

Generally, "application" means 'what can this be used for' or 'why is this important'. Basically, how would you apply this knowledge to a real world problem.

It sounds like your project has a lot of environmental implications, so I think there is a lot you could say about water quality. I would double check with your teacher though, and make sure that this is what he or she wants.
