Hi, soccer.dancegrl,

Welcome to Science Buddies. I think that your idea for the science project sounds very interesting.

The first thing that you should do to start your project is to come up with a hypothesis or question you would like to answer with your experiment. In this link: http://www.sciencebuddies.com/science-f ... l?from=TSW, they give you some ideas for questions to test (at the bottom of the page), like "Has the intensity of hurricanes increased in the last years?". Once you decide about the question you want to test, you could follow instructions in that page and create a table with the intensity levels of the storms during those years (say the last 10 years) and compare them to the intensities from the previous decade, for example. All those data can be found in the NOAA/National Weather Service website. Based on that comparison, you should be able to come to some conclusions that will support or deny your initial hypothesis.

I hope that this helps, but, please, do not hesitate to contact us again if you still have doubts or questions.

Hi,

The project writeup you referenced has good ideas for a project- just read it completely.
Here are some websites with good background information to answer your questions:
A simple experiment to show the principles:
http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/00000122
A good general background on hurricanes:
http://www.juliantrubin.com/encyclopedi ... icane.html (scroll down from the ads)

Good luck with the project.

Best regards,
Barrett Tomlinson
