Hi daughejo,
An easy way to measure force is with a spring scale.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_scale
You might also need to use a lever if the force needed to pull the nail is greater than the maximum force measurable by the scale.

If you are asking about what key words to use to research the holding power of nails, try "hoding power of nails". One article that comes up is http://books.google.com/books?id=O6UJAA ... &ct=result which references some work done in the 1890's. The F. W. Clay work at Cornell University College of Civil Engineering is instructive.
