What is the box going to be used for? There are numerous kinds of lights you might be talking about.
All that said, it would be an interesting exercise in basic electrical engineering to create such a box, which could have different characteristics depending on how you wire it up. Please make sure to have qualified adult supervision if working with electricity from a wall socket or other reasonably high voltage source. Sticking with a small number of AA, D, etc., batteries is probably safe.
