Help please??

Post by John1010 »

Hello,

I am stuck on my research planing. I have some minor experience in a hospital lab and was asked to assist a chemistry professor in his research. My interests are more in human physiology, mainly the human eye. I have many specialists in my county that might be able to help me. Should I do a chemistry project and enter it in the Intel ISEF 2013 and enter an Ophthalmology project in Intel ISEF 2014? Even though chemistry does not interest me it might be good experience.

Hi John1010,

It seems that you are confused as to which field of area you want to research, and I understand how tough that kind of decision can be at times.

Since you are more interested in opthalmology, I suggest that you pursue that over the chemistry project that might not win your interest in the manner.

It is most important that you research in the field you genuinely want because that will generate the inspiration, and motivation that will drive you to research with more tenacity.
Rather than going with the chemistry project offered to you, which is still a great opportunity and an awesome offer, I suggest you to prioritize your interest first.

Science research can be tough and difficult at times, but what relieves that kind of stress is the genuine passion for the research.

In addition, I would like to mention that Intel Isef spots are given to the winners of state or local science and engineering fairs. So there is a prerequisite before participating in the Intel Isef competition.
Hopefully, you will make it with a project that you are truly passionate about.

I wish you good luck in making that decision!

Hi John,

Grace has given you some excellent advice. It is true that passion for your research is the best motivator for success. I also think that trying to do two different projects might prevent you from dedicating your full attention to a prize-winning project.

That said, have you talked to your chemistry professor about your interests? Perhaps you could do a project involving the chemistry of the eye.

In the end, I agree that you need to follow your passion.

Best of luck!

Heather
