Science Project

My son wants to do a science project based on something he saw in the "National Geographic Kids Almanac". It said that a Kids brain (average 10 yr old) weighs 3 lbs (1.4 kg mass) which weighs as much as 700 gummy bears. He is in 3rd grade. Do you have any ideas on how we can create a project on this that is age appropriate. Is Mass a subject that third graders would learn about? Our current plan is to make a balance scale or fulcrum scale to show how they weigh the same, as well as , using other objects of different sizes that weigh the same as the brain. Does this sound like a decent idea?

Hi,

This is a good idea for a science project, however, it is more of a demonstration rather than an experiment. Check with your son's teacher and see if this would be acceptable; chances are that at third grade, the teacher will be expecting a simple experiment based on a scientific principle.

For example, here's an easy project that investigates the relationship between different dimensions and volume. You would have time to do this one before the due date.
