Iodine 1% in a project that calls for 2% Lugol's Iodine Solution

Can they use what they have locally, which is 1% iodine, for the experiment. Will this work for this project: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... -vitamin-c

The project calls for 2% Lugol's iodine solution.

Hello!

Using 1% iodine solution alone may not be suitable for this experiment. There are a couple of reasons why:
- Indicator function: the starch solution serves as an indicator that changes color in the presence of iodine. 1% Iodine would not have those same abilities
- Titration accuracy: the starch solution as an indicator allows for a precise titration of the iodine solution. Overall, this gives a consistent and accurate titration process
- Iodine concentration: 1% iodine solution may not be the optimal concentration for accurate titration in the experiment. The iodine solution used in the titration is typically lower and varies based on the method protocol.

I hope this helps!

Dilution: Since the local iodine solution is 1%, you may need to dilute it further to achieve a concentration similar to 2% Lugol's solution. You can dilute the 1% iodine solution with water to increase its volume while maintaining the desired concentration.
Effect on Results: The concentration of iodine in the solution affects its color and intensity, which are essential for the experiment's observations. A lower concentration of iodine may result in less pronounced color changes, making it more challenging to detect the presence of vitamin C accurately. scratch geometry dash
Accuracy: Using a different concentration of iodine solution may introduce variability and affect the accuracy of the experiment's measurements. It's essential to account for this potential discrepancy when analyzing the results.
Controlled Comparisons: If possible, it's ideal to conduct a control experiment using the recommended 2% Lugol's iodine solution alongside the experiment using the 1% iodine solution. This allows for direct comparisons and helps assess the impact of the iodine concentration on the results.
