ferric ions

Post by donnahardy2 »

Hi Scott,

If you are dissolving iron in various types of water, you will need to understand about iron chemistry. If you are starting with a piece of iron metal, you will have the neutral element Fe. When exposed to oxygen, iron is oxidized to ferrous ions, or Fe II and then to ferric ions, or Fe III. Ferric ions are positively charged, or cationic, and are always associated with negatively charged anions. So, if you dissolve Fe in hydrochloric acid (HCl), you will have ferric chloride (FeCl3) in solution. The following website has the chemical equations for this process.

What grade are you in? Have you had chemistry yet? Also, how are you meauring your results?
