How to measure surface tension of water mixed with alcohol

Post by Tracey Murphy »

Alcohol is supposed to lower the surface tension of water but how can I measure this to get data for my science fair? I would like to use water as the control then be able to use water + alcohol, and water + oil. I've read that alcohol decreases the surface tension of water but how can I do an experiment to show this?

Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Thank you :D

Try putting "measuring surface tension" into your favorite search engine and you should find some hits on the newton site among others that will be useful background.
