Hi pinktulip573,
Here are three web resources for building a robot:
1. Good background is at "Building Your First Robot": http://www.robotics.com/arobot/build.html
The emphasis here is on high price robots ($200 and up), so this is more the background.
2. HOW TO - Make a robot from an old computer mouse:
http://www.digg.com/mods/HOW_TO_-_Make_ ... uter_mouse
which points to:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Mousebot-Revisited/
The mouse here is built for less than $10, and is definitely low tech. You'll need to get some adult help since soldering is needed.
3. You can see if any of the RadioShack products meet your needs at:
http://www.radioshack.com/search/index. ... robot&sr=1
I'm not addressing the why part.
