Measuring Nutrional Value

Post by ecstephy »

I am trying desperately to start my 2 year science project and my Thesis statement should hopefully be :
Do ripe genetically modified tomatoes have the same nutritional value as a fresh organic tomato

is there anyway that I personally could measure nutritional value? or vitamin levels....?

Hi,

The answer is yes to both your questions. You can fairly easily measure vitamin C levels, for example. Here is a Science Buddies experiment to do so:

You can also measure nutritional value. Here are review articles on approaches to doing so:

You did not indicate your education level. Is this an advanced high school project, or are you attemptling college level work? If you have access to college level facilities I strongly recommend doing some literature surveys in this field before going much further. A search of Chemical Abstracts and other abstracting services would likely inundate you with relevant information as this general area has been heavily studied by others.

Best wishes for a successful study!

Oh Thank you so much! This is a Honors-AP project for my Sophomore and Junior year of High school. I have to take notes on twelve sources and write a five page paper about it ! Thanks so much! Life just became a little less stressful!
