Finding a topic for math

Post by Ireallymetal »

I've been having an incredible amount of difficulty finding a topic in mathematics for the STS competition this fall.
I want to do something in elementary Euclidean geometry but it has been around for 2000 years and is already an incredibly researched field. My problem is is that a lot of the topics in math that may qualify for an STS research paper require math that is way beyond the ability of a high school student.

Can anybody give me any advice on how to find something for mathematics?

Ireallymetal,

I think your best bet is to go and have some informal chats with college math professors, from community colleges up to state universities (whatever is in your area). Let them know your interests, your knowledge and skill level, and your time available for the project. They will give you very useful feedback and lots of interesting ideas.

How about a computer programming angle to something having to do with Euclidean geometry?
