STS Finalist
STS Finalist
Is there any STS finalist who can tell me what the competition is like? What kind of questions will we be asked and what to expect?
Beyond knowing your project in depth (which is given), is there anything to prepare for, and if so, how?
Re: STS Finalist
Hi John - Congratulations if you are moving on as an STS finalist!
I don't believe there are volunteers helping in these forums right now who will be able to provide information about presenting at this fair.…

Jumping Robot
Jumping Robot
Hi,
Is there a video to show how to solder the on/off switch and or use the breadboard switch for the jumping robot? I tried to add a switch to the robot and the battery would start to smoke. What am I doing wrong? What’s the best way to install a switch to turn it on / off?
Re: Jumping Robot
Hi there,
There is no video on ScienceBuddies that shows how to solder the wires, however you can use a breadboard to supplement the soldering. All the switch does is…

Electricity, Electrolytes, Confused Parent
Hello,
I'm helping my son with his science fair project.
Our plan is to guess which of various substances will _______ electricity [this is my question] the best.
He will make a guess, explain it and then conduct the experiment (with close supervision).
Ammonia, vinegar, distilled water, lemon juice and a few substances will have zinc and copper nails dipped in them, with each hooked up to a voltmeter. …

bioluminescent bacteria
bioluminescent bacteria
I have a student using bioluminescent bacteria to detect heavy metal contamination in water. We have a Vernier light sensor and a tiny circuits light meter, but neither one is picking up light from any of our bacteria ... stock or in the contaminated waters. We subcultured the bacteria, so we know it is alive and properly reproducing. Does anyone know why we can't seem to pick up light readings?

Science Project Suggestions for High School Students?
Hi everyone
I am looking for ideas for a fun science project for high school students. I want a project that is practical, easy to do, but still creative. Some of my areas of interest are renewable energy, environment, and artificial intelligence. Can you suggest suitable projects for me? Also, if you have any reference materials or instructions, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks…

Help defining question/hypothesis
Help defining question/hypothesis
My daughter is wanting to do a science fair project about dreams. She’s done the background on what dreams are, theories on why we dream but we’re struggling with the project portion. She’s decided to give out a questionnaire about people’s dreams and she thinks she would like to compare differences in adults’ and kids’ dream content in her “hypothesis”Would a survey asking about topics of dreams, frequency of nightmares be…

Mass Driver Project Question
Mass Driver Project Question
My 7th grader is working on the Mass Driver project currently and we do not happen to have any hall effect sensors at the moment. Would IR sensors work in their place?
I had an additional question, could he reverse the polarity of the electromagnet using an L298N motor driver? I thought it might work but I don't want to frustrate him with my possibly bad idea. He wanted to try to push the projectile after it passed the sensor by…
