Cocoa beans in a cocoa pod. Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service. Cocoa is the key ingredient in chocolate, and while it may seem like the candy display at your local store is never at risk of running on empty, the U. S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) reports that "worldwide demand for cacao now exceeds production." Adding to the problem is the fact that cocoa farmers face a large number of environmental… Read more

A Perseid meteor striking in 2007. Source: Wikipedia, Mila Zinkova I read about the Perseid meteor shower in the newspaper the morning of August 12—the day the annual meteor shower was predicted to peak. The Science Mom in me flagged the event, but even so, I thought to myself, "I'm not sure I want the kids to miss their bedtime again." Over the summer, it is so easy to not enforce bedtimes, and I have lately fallen into the sliding bedtime trap, the kids growing… Read more

Thanks to a grant from the Motorola Foundation's Innovation Generation program, Science Buddies will be developing online resources related to summer science camps. [Editor's Note: Madeline Sides, 2010 Intel ISEF participant, has been testing project ideas this summer from the Science Buddies library of 1000+ science projects.] It sometimes seems like movies and books tell us that, in life, one has to choose between being the jock or the brain, the football star or the mathematician. Hopefully, most of us grow up knowing… Read more

Madeline Sides, 2010 Intel ISEF participant and Science Buddies intern Greetings, fellow "Science Buddies!" My name is Maddy, and I am working this summer for Science Buddies testing project ideas that appear in their directory of more than 1000 science projects. I've been testing anywhere from 5-12 projects a week, so I am constantly busy making messes "in the name of science." My favorite project this week was Burning Calories: How Much Energy is Stored in Different Types of… Read more

The "Adidas Jabulani" is the official match ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Image source: Wikipedia, RoyFocker 12. A World Cup Debate Away on vacation last week, I was admittedly only vaguely aware that the World Cup was getting ready to start. With soccer kids in the house, I did "know" it was World Cup time, but in the actual passing of days, we were busy trying to get kites in the air, exploring the impact of wind on the trajectory of air-pumped rockets, and throwing Nerf football.… Read more
