Mapping Technician

Career Profile

Essential members of any construction team include mapping and surveying technicians—the "instrument people"—who set up and operate special equipment that measures distances, curves, elevations, and angles between points on Earth's surface. These technicians then take the data gathered by the instruments and create maps and charts on a computer. About half of their work is spent in hands-on, high-technology data collection in the field, while the other half is spent in an… Read more

Microsystems Engineer

Career Profile

Have you ever seen a car-crash safety test? The airbags always deploy just in time to save the test dummy, which is good news for those of us who travel in cars! What makes the airbag deploy properly? A tiny microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) device called an accelerometer. MEMS devices are used in many applications, from inkjet printer cartridges to neural probes. Typically 1 micrometer (µm) to 1 millimeter (mm) in dimension, MEMS devices require special techniques to make.… Read more

Nanosystems Engineer

Career Profile

Imagine creating a new material, medicine, or electrical component that is too small to see. How would you design it? What could the new invention do? These are precisely the types of questions that nanosystems engineers answer every day. Nanosystems engineers design and build new technologies using the smallest building blocks, atoms, and molecules. Read more

Photonics Engineer

Career Profile

You can send emails and text messages around the world in a matter of seconds. Surgeons routinely perform laser surgery that results in less bleeding and faster healing time. Our Air Force defends our skies using electronics-based aircraft that can almost fly themselves! In space, we are revolutionizing satellite communication that improve things like GPS systems and weather forecasting. What is one of the connections among these advances? Photonics technology! Photonics is the science of… Read more

Photonics Technician

Career Profile

Do you enjoy watching cable television, texting on your phone, and surfing the Internet? Do you know anyone who has had eye surgery and been back to normal the next day? Are you curious how we obtain high resolution photos from outer space? Many of the advances in telecommunications, medicine and space are due to laser and fiber-optic technology. This technology has led to devices that provide faster and richer communication, advanced surgeries, and faster healing times, as well as amazing… Read more

Quality Control Inspector

Career Profile

Imagine having the superpower to ensure that everything around us is top-notch and meets the highest standards. As a Quality Control Inspector, you become a super detective. You inspect and test products like toys, technology and cars. You make sure the products are perfect before they reach the hands of customers. Paying attention to detail and commitment to perfection leads to making sure every item is made exactly as it should be. Read more

Radio Frequency Engineer

Career Profile

Radio frequency engineers help make sure that information gets from one place to another. This information is transmitted wirelessly as radio waves between electronic devices. Anything you can wirelessly send from one computer to another, listen to on the radio, download on a mobile phone, or see on the television (not connected to cable) is sent wirelessly using radio waves, and the transmission and devices were designed by a radio frequency engineer. Radio frequency engineers are typically… Read more

Transportation Planner

Career Profile

Do you spend time enjoying a city park? The next time you go, take a minute to look around and see how other people arrive at the park. Some people may walk to the park on a maintained pathway. Others may come via the subway, if one is located close by. Still others may be dropped off by car, at a designated curb. A few may even bicycle to the park. But who plans all of these different ways of getting to the park? Well, that would be a transportation planner, who figures out how to get all of… Read more

Water & Liquid Waste Treatment Plant & System Operator

Career Profile

Have you ever wondered what happens to that soapy water from your kitchen sink or laundry room washer, or the waste water from your bathroom? What about the water that factories discharge after making products? Or the water that runs off of roads and farmlands after a big storm? Water and liquid waste treatment plant and system operators run the amazing water treatment plants that remove pollutants and other harmful materials from waste water, so that it can be safely returned to the… Read more

Water or Wastewater Engineer

Career Profile

When you think about a city that is a great place to live, what do you consider? Probably a community where the citizens are happy, healthy, and comfortable. Part of being all three is having a clean, safe, and constant water supply. Many of us take for granted that when we turn the faucet on we will be able to get a glass of water or that when we flush the toilet our waste will be carried away and treated somewhere. Well, that is what a water or wastewater engineer does. Their job is to design… Read more
