Hydrogel project

Hi!

My daughter tried the hydrogel recipe with agar and citric acid. After setting the hydrogel for about 18 hours, she submerged the hydrogel in water, but it absorbed hardly any water. The weight of 25 g hydrogel went up by only about 4 gms after an hour. Is this within the expected range?
