These projects explore topics key to Good Health and Well-Being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that enables computers and robots to perform tasks requiring intelligence. The tasks can be as simple as programming a computer to play an easy game like tic-tac-toe or as challenging as having a computer diagnose and treat a sick patient. Sometimes artificial intelligence is used to get machines to do things that humans already do well, like using spoken language to communicate. Other times AI is used to do tasks that are hard for humans, like predicting how new proteins might fold up into 3D structures and how those structures interact with other nearby proteins.

Machine learning is a subfield of AI where a machine "learns" how to do something without the programming telling it exactly how to deal with every step. In machine learning, a computer is given data from which it builds a model, and that model can repeatedly be trained, tested, and have more data added until it performs well. Companies are using machine learning to build robots that walk, self-driving cars, computers that can compose music, and many other types of technology.
You can try your hand at AI and machine learning with these exciting projects and experiments.

Do you ever wonder if you spend too much time online? How can the amount of time spent on social media influence someone's mental health? What other factors play a role? In this science project, you will investigate which variables correlate with better mental health scores using a machine learning algorithm called the Random Forest algorithm.

For cancer patients, remission–a period when the signs and symptoms of cancer are reduced or disappear–brings immense relief, but there is often a chance of recurrence, or the cancer coming back. Have you ever wondered how doctors can predict if cancer might come back in some patients? Thyroid cancer, a type of cancer affecting the thyroid gland, has a recurrence rate of about 5-30%. Depending on many factors, some patients may have a higher chance of thyroid cancer recurrence than…

Getting started with machine learning is like unlocking a new world of possibilities, and the best part is that you don't need to be a computer genius to do it! In this project, you will create a K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) machine learning model that can predict whether a patient has a benign tumor or malignant breast cancer based on the characteristics of the tumor cell nucleus, such as its radius, perimeter, area, and smoothness.

Ticks are a growing public health concern in North America, as their populations and the diseases they carry, like Lyme disease, are on the rise. But how can we help people identify the ticks they encounter to reduce their risk of infection? With artificial intelligence! In this project, you will gather image data of three different tick species and use a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify them. You will also apply image augmentation techniques to expand and enhance the dataset,…

Have you ever wondered how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to improve human health and medicine? Computers can now identify human joints as key points to track our body movements. They can then use this information along with training data sets to show us if we perform exercises safely, to prevent us from getting injured. Create your own data set and test out if your algorithm can reliably detect good and bad exercise form.
