Modifying the Light-tracking bristlebot Modifying the Light-tracking bristlebot We have successfully built the light-tracking bristlebot. It was such a fun project! Will the circuit work if we replace the photoresistor with an IR sensor to make a heat-tracking bristlebot that will detect the warmth of a hand? Thank you! Re: Modifying the Light-tracking bristlebot Hi, There are different types of IR sensors, so in general it is not a matter of simply swapping out the photoresistor for an IR… Read more

Reducing Salt's Harmful Influence on Algae Reducing Salt's Harmful Influence on Algae Hello! I live in Utah, fairly close to the Great Salt Lake. The Great Salt Lake is drying up rapidly, causing the salt content to rise dramatically. From the top of my head I know that salt can have a negative impact on the algae in the lake, which serves as a food resource for brine shrimp. So as the salt concentration increases, the brine shrimp population in the Great Salt Lake are threatened. How… Read more
Rock Candy Experiment Rock Candy Experiment Hi, we did the experiment yesterday using 5:1 sugar and water. The mixture was not clear and it became milky solid after we poured it into the small cups. We We did this last year and it was successful. Anyone have any ideas? And is it possible we could reuse the mixture by adding more water to do the experiment again? Thank you. Re: Testable question What kind of question you have depends on what you will be doing in the project and what type of app you plan to build. If you are just building the app.... you will be using the engineering design process to… Read more
Why is transparent specimen transparent? Why is transparent specimen transparent? Could you tell me the reasons why the diaphonization looks transparent, that is, it allows light to pass through, from an optical perspective? I found how to create a transparent specimen, however, I do not understand the principles. Re: Why is transparent specimen transparent? Hi! Good question. The process of diaphonization is literally digesting tissues with chemicals (specifically an enzyme) that digest… Read more

Can't get potato light to work Can't get potato light to work Hi. My daughter is doing a science project and her experiment is the well known potato light. We have done everything as we should, hooked up 6 large potatoes with galvanised nails and copper, copper wire, crocodile clips and the voltage meter reading from the multimeter for all is 4.4v. The light bulb is an 1.5v LED. We can light up the 1.5v led lightbulb with a 1.5v battery but we can't light it up with the 4.5v reading we are… Read more
