Is Smiling Contagious?

Science Fair Project Idea

Scientific Method

You've probably observed from your own personal experiences that some actions are contagious. Yawning is a great example. When one person in a room yawns, several other people usually do, too. Coughing, clearing your throat, these are other actions that often seem contagious. But what about smiling? Have you ever walked down the street and had a random stranger smile at you? Did it make you happy? Did you smile back? In this science fair project, you'll investigate whether smiling is… Read more

Make a Hygrometer with Strands of Hair

Science Fair Project Idea

Scientific Method

Does your hair go crazy when the weather turns damp? Did you know that strands of hair can relax and lengthen when the humidity increases and then contract again when the humidity decreases? In fact, hair strands can be used as the basis for a hygrometer, a device which measures the humidity level in the air. Will a hygrometer help you to predict bad hair days(!) or can you use it to help predict the weather? Read more

Make a Medical Alert Fall Detector

Science Fair Project Idea

Engineering Design Process

Have you ever wondered what someone would do if they fell, got hurt, and could not get up on their own? What if they were home alone and could not reach a phone to call for help? Or, what if they lost consciousness - is there any way to automatically detect that they fell and needed help? In this project, you will program your own fall detector, a device that can automatically detect when someone has fallen over, then sound an alarm or even send a message to someone else. Devices like these are… Read more

Measuring Soil Erosion

Science Fair Project Idea

Scientific Method

When you think of environmental challenges facing the world, the first things that come to mind might be global warming, or loss of biodiversity, since these are often in the newspapers. A serious problem that you may not have heard about is soil erosion. Why is soil so important? What is the danger of erosion? How can we measure soil erosion? What can be done to prevent it? Check out this project and you can start finding answers. Read more

Modifying a Car for Better Aerodynamics

Science Fair Project Idea

Scientific Method

Have you ever seen those cool wind tunnel pictures of cars with streams of smoke blowing over them? You do not need access to a wind tunnel to do a car aerodynamics science project! In this project you will use cheap, readily available materials—tape and yarn—to visualize airflow over a car. You will examine how you can affect the airflow over the car by making changes, like adding or removing accessories or making body modifications out of cardboard and duct tape. Maybe you can… Read more

Now You See It, Now You Don't: A Chromatic Adaptation Project

Science Fair Project Idea

Scientific Method

This project shows that our perceptions can change, even with the stimulus remains the same. A clear color difference in an image disappears after just 20 seconds of looking at another (special) image. Now you see it, now you don't! Read more

Rise to the Occasion: Investigating Requirements for Yeast Fermentation

Science Fair Project Idea

Scientific Method

Did you ever wonder how yeast makes bread dough rise? This project will show you what yeast does to make this happen. You'll also investigate the conditions yeast needs to grow. Read more
